Lara Djonggrang: Dining in a Private Museum

Lara Djonggrang 2

The main attraction of Lara Djonggrang is the decor, both exterior and interior.  Starting from the large banyan tree in the front yard up to the inside of the home which was converted into a restaurant that is unique and a bit mystical.   The rooms, the tables, the benches, the chairs, the lighting, the floor are all beautiful.  Not to mention innumerable collections of antiques.  The statue of Lara Djonggrang, a visualization of the mythical Javanese girl on her way to heavens is one of the Masterpieces in this Restaurant

This restaurant offers traditional food from all over Indonesia.  All the food that we ordered were delicious.

Jalan Sudirman, Jakarta

Jakarta 10

Every day, over the years, I passed this Jakarta main street, Jalan Sudirman, to get to my office.  I knew by heart the conditions of this street: the buildings on both sides of the street, every entry and exit point from fast lane to slow lane and vice versa and places where traffic jams occurred frequently.  However, I rarely took time to admire how beautiful Jalan Sudirman was.  This afternoon I had the opportunity to take some photos of Jalan Sudirman on my way back to the office after lunch.

Kaihomaru: Crispy Baby Shrimps for Lunch

Kaihomaru 2

The ground floor and the first floor of our office building – Citiloft/Citiwalk Sudirman – are dedicated for cafes and restaurants.  More than  twenty eating places serving lunch everyday.  But every day we are still struggling in deciding which restaurant to eat.

Kaihomaru, a Japanese Restaurant, on the 1st floor is the solution that we always take, when we don’t know which one to go.  The dishes are light, yet satisfying.    My favorites are shibaebi karaage (crispy baby shrimps) and sake onigiri (salmon rice ball)

Bale Raos: Royal Cuisine ala Kraton Yogyakarta

Bale Raos 2

A few times I had dinner with my family in Bale Raos Yogyakarta, which was located inside the Kraton (Palace).  I really loved the ambiance of the restaurant. Very Javanese and very royal.  As for the dishes, not so much that I could remember.

Bale Raos had opened its branch in Jakarta in Kebayoran Baru area.  The atmosphere was different than that in Yogya. Very ordinary.  And still, there was nothing special about the main dishes, although it was written in the menu, that this dish was the favorite of this Sultan and that dish was the favorite of other Sultan.   However,  the traditional desserts were very very very good.  Will be back for the desserts.

Kedai Pelangi: Offers Sop Konro and Buras

Kedai Pelangi

Kedai Pelangi, located on the congested street of Jalan Sabang, serves a variety of   traditional  foods of Makassar such as Coto Makassar and Sop Konro, the famous rib soup, complete with buras (rice cake similar to lontong or ketupat, the Javanese rice cakes).   Kedai Pelangi  also offers traditional desserts such as ‘palu butung’ and ‘es pisang ijo’.

If you are in Jakarta and  are longing for Makassar food, Kedai Pelangi is one of the few places you should visit.  A bit of advice. though, if you order Sop Konro remind the server to bring you a very hot soup .  Mine was not as hot as it was  supposed to be.

Mari Masak Kerak Telor

Kerak 4

Buka tutupnya dan masukkan satu butir telor bebek, satu sendok makan serundeng kelapa gurih, satu sendok teh serundeng kelapa manis,  satu sendok makan bawang goreng, satu sendok teh ebi bubuk, garam, gula dan merica secukupnya.

Kerak 5

Aduk dengan cepat dan merata.

Kerak 6

Eid al-Fitri Dinner at Le Gran

Lontong (rice cake). opor ayam (Javanese chicken curry), dendeng balado (crispy sliced meat), sambal goreng ati (liver in spicy coconut milk), egg and chayote

Idul Fitri was not complete without  a dish of “Lontong and Opor Ayam” (rice cake and Javanese chicken curry). As long as I could remember, my mom and my sisters in Yogya always prepared this dish to celebrate the holiday.  Since my mom had passed away earlier this year, and I had travelled to Yogya so many times within the last three months,  I decided to celebrate the holiday in Jakarta.  Without forsaking Lontong and Opor, of course.

After calling several hotels and asking them if they had lontong and opor ayam in their restaurants’ menu, finally I, Maga, Junior,  Meina, and Widya went to Hotel Gran Mahakam’s coffee shop, known as Le Gran.  The Lontong Mahakam that we had, although it was different from what we normally had in our big family’s home in Yogya, was excellent.  In addition, we also had a chance to taste other dishes too, such as seafood steamboat, sushi, prata and curry and the delicious melted chocolate cake.  I would like also to mention here, that the waitress who served us was really helpful.  Seldom we met such a dedicated buffet restaurant attendant who would go a long way to offer you a dish and get it for you.  Good Job.
