Uchiko: Ten-Course Chef’s Daily Tasting Menu
Pingin tahu apa yang istimewa di restoran ini, kami sengaja tidak memilih sendiri makanan yang kami pesan. Kami menyerahkannya kepada Christopher, waiter kami malam itu. Chris menyarankan OMAKASE, 10 makanan pilihan chef. Biasanya makanan ini dihidangkan untuk 2 orang. Mendengar 10 macam makanan, rombongan kami yang terdiri 6 orang memutuskan untuk memesan 2 Omakase saja, nanti kalau kurang ditambah disana sini. Ternyata pilihan Chris OK sekali. Untuk informasi, 1 set Omakase harganya $ 184.

The first night in Austin, my son took us to this restaurant in Triangle area. The place was fully packed, and there was a long queue in front of the cashier. I almost gave up, but my son convinced me that the food was extraordinary. Indeed it was. I was glad that we stayed.

Lan Na Thai: On Jakarta’s Busiest Street
You may have passed this restaurant many times and yet you don’t notice its existence. Occupaying a regular house, without parking lot and on one of the busiest street in Jakarta – behind Mandarin Hotel and German Embassy – you bound to miss this place. Fortunately, the restaurant provides valet parking service. Once you were inside the restaurant, you would be transformed to another world. Classy, Antique and tranquil. Not to mention that the food is excellent.

Its legendary “Sop Buntut” – a Javanese style oxtail soup – maybe the best in Jakarta. However, to have to ask for “sambal” and “acar” (chilli sauce and pickles) to the server every time we order oxtail soup that should be served automatically is a little bit annoying. By the way, I vote Handayani’s oxtail soup in Surabaya as the best oxtail soup in Indonesia.

Saung Grenvil: As Yummy as Those Offered by Street Vendors
The most delicious Indonesian seafood is actually those offered by street vendors such as those along Jalan Pecenongan and Gunung Sahari in Jakarta. If you don’t mind the dust, the fumes, the humidity and the smell, along-the-street food-courts can be a fun place to hang out. But if you prefer a clean, air-conditioned room, go to Saung Grenvil at Jl. Wahid Hasyim instead.

Most of the food stalls in ‘Bintaro 9 Walk’ sell well only on the week-end nights. Only few can attract many patrons during week nights. Nasi Uduk Pak Jhon is among the few. Every night is a busy night for Pak Jhon (this is the correct spelling of his name) and his batik uniformed servers.

Planet Hollywood Jakarta: Goodbye, Terminator
After more than 2 years, we finally went back to Planet Hollywood Jakarta and expected to be greeted by the “Terminator”. But we were in for surprise. Not only that the Terminator and the movie stars stage had gone, the glamour, the dashing and the Hollywood atmosphere were also gone. Replace by a dull warehouse-cum-movie studio interior design. Fortunately, the foods were still, even more tasteful, than before.

Han Gang Monginsidi is located on the second floor of a building not far from “Pasar Santa”. The restaurant does not have its own entrance, so to get there you have to go through a pre-owned (antique …?) car showroom. If you have claustrophobia like me, you better climb the stairs, the lift is so small.

Pelem Golek: Pondok Makan di Yogya Utara
Pada waktu memesan Sapi Mongolia, saya pikir yang akan disajikan adalah sapi ala Mongolian grill yang kering. Ternyata yang keluar adalah Sapi Mongolia khas Pelem Golek yang sedikit berkuah dan disajikan di atas pepaya matang yang manis. Rasa yang tercipta adalah rasa nano-nano … asam, manis dan pedas. Sapi Mongolia merupakan salah satu signature dish nya Pelem Golek, restauran yang sebenarnya lebih mengkhususkan pada ikan.
